Animasimanis & The Ministry of Health

A part of the job order from one of our clients at Awesometrics is to monitor issues related to diabetes. Last week, I got some articles to be sorted and summarized from our data processing team, which talked about a competition program called "animasimanis". This competition was held by Health Promotion Center of The Ministry of Health in collaboration with Sanofi Group Indonesia. Fyi, Sanofi Group is one of biggest pharmaceutical companies in Indonesia. The company produces and distributes synthetic fibers and medicines for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, neurogical diseases, etc. According to this article, animasimanis was a competition for those who are capable to create so called short animation film about diabetes, and it was opened  from June 1st to July 31st 2015. So practically it has been closed and has collected 107 works from the participants.




In my opinion,  for Indonesian, animasimanis is very ear-catchy. You can divide this word in two and get two Indonesian words: animasi (animation) and manis (sweet). The combination of these words definitely represents the theme of the competition itself. Manis is related to sugar which can leads to diabetes, and animasi refers to the contested creation which expected to be animation short movie. Another ear-catchy factor is the similar letters which build this word. Try to say it in Bahasa pronunciation, it's like repetition, right? Right. :)
Well, from those facts, I can say that animasimanis is very ear catchy so it can be easier to remember. However, i am still questioning the tone of the word "manis" which - in this program - refers to diabetes. In my opinion, "manis" tends to have positive meaning than diabetes which sounds negative for it is one of diseases. Yes, manis is positive, like "gadis manis" (sweet girl), "senyum manis" (sweet smile), "sikap yg manis" (nice attitude). So when i said the word animasimanis in front of my friends who did not know what kind of competition animasimanis was, they could imagine a cartoon or animation about girls stuff of cats (cats in Indonesia are commonly called "si manis"). On the other word, this ear-catchy word unfortunately do not represent the theme quiet strong. In my opinion, the title could remain as it was, but needed a tagline, hehe.

After reviewing the title, I am now going to talk about its communication strategy in promoting this competition. They collected 107 participants in 3 months, what do you think? I do not think that was enough. We have a bunch of young and talented animators, graphic designers, videographers, and even students in related field. But they only got 107 short movies. And to be frankly honest, the winner should have been more qualified than the actual winner. I mean, it is said that 30 best videos will be used as educational tools about diabetes, but sadly I have to say that the best video did not meet my qualification as an informative, educative and attractive at the same time. I should say that an animation can be boring, too. It's too long, it's too much narration, but not really represented by the animation. An informative video does not mean to be full of scientific information, right? Right. Hehe. You can combine a scientific info with a story of a fictional figure - but based on real fact and acceptable with the logic of the scientific info. Some eye-catchy fonts can also be added in some part to help us not just hear the new biological or medical terminology, but also read it.

The question is, why? Why the ministry of health and Sanofi Group could not get more candidates and better winners! This is a problem. I wonder how much money did the Ministry of Health has spent to hold this program. Besides, I don't think this is a part of the Sanofi's CSR.
